Greyhound Bus Terminal Chicago, Illinois Completion: 1989 Area: 35,000 square feet Site & Program: The site is strategically located to provide bus transportation to downtown Chicago. The program includes waiting areas and administrative offices. Design: Nagle Hartray conceived this design as a prototype for other Greyhound terminals. The roof is suspended from structural steel masts to provide unobstructed covered parking for buses. The roof and masts give the terminal a physical identity within a dense urban area. The efficient maneuverability of buses through the facility is the genesis for planning. Diagonal bus parking informs the orientation of interior offices. Masonry walls screen buses from neighbors and relate the terminal to the fabric of nearby commercial buildings. The simple but dramatic structure is an efficient solution that also furthers the brand identity of an old company in an urban area. Photography: ©Hedrich Blessing
