Harpo Studios Chicago, Illinois Completion: 1990/Ongoing Area: 100,000 square feet Site & Program: The site is located on Chicago’s near west side. This is an adaptive reuse project that included the installation of advanced production facilities into 1920s-era studio buildings. It is best known as home to the Oprah Winfrey Show. Design: Nagle Hartray led a team of twenty consultants to convert old and poorly maintained buildings into state of the art production facilities. This conversion helped revitalize a suffering urban neighborhood. Heat generated by specialty lighting systems together with the need for acoustic isolation placed unusual demands on the design of mechanical systems and the exterior closure. Exterior design recalls the art deco of nearby buildings and the golden age of movie production. A glass block corner and reveals embedded in the wall surface give definition and scale to what is by necessity a windowless building. Nagle Hartray continues to furnish design services to this dynamic organization as they improve the quality and scope of their productions. Photography: ©Hedrich Blessing |
