University of Chicago Laboratory Schools Chicago, Illinois Completion: 1991/2003 Area: Varies with project Awards: Excellence in Masonry, Silver Medal Award; Award of Recognition, Chicago Building Congress; Excellence in Masonry, Best of Stone Award Site & Program: The Laboratory Schools is a five-building campus that is part of the University of Chicago. It serves children from nursery school through 12th grade. Nagle Hartray master planned the campus and then expanded and renovated four buildings. Design: Nagle Hartray first designed a 38,000 square foot addition to the Middle School. It is fit between century-old buildings and was the first new stone Gothic building constructed on the campus in 60 years. Then Nagle Hartray renovated and expanded the Rowley Library, which serves both Middle School and High School. Nagle Hartray also designed the 25,000 square foot Kovler Gymnasium and adjacent playing fields to expand the school’s athletic facilities. The gym design strikes a balance between Gothic styling and contemporary construction methods. The firm’s most recent Lab School project is the renovation of science laboratories and administrative offices. Future projects include the renovation of the natatorium. As the Laboratory School architect, Nagle Hartray has woven a group of disparate buildings into a campus with a unified identity that reflects the unique mission of this well respected school.
