Washington University Residence Halls St. Louis, Missouri Completion: 1990 Area: 145,000 square feet Site & Program: The residence halls are located on a wooded and rolling campus site. The University’s program required walk-up cluster housing and apartment configurations for 332 beds. Design: The design of the new residence hall is based on older campus precedents. The red brick and granite exterior derives from local architectural traditions. The vaulted roof forms originate from traditional campus buildings. From this palette, Nagle Hartray created an architecture that relates interior functions with exterior forms. Shared living areas have higher ceilings under vaulted roofing. This creates a hierarchy in exterior elevations that is a reprieve from the typically repetitive nature of this building type. Photography: ©Hedrich Blessing |
