North Shore Country Day School Winnetka, Illinois Completion: 1987/2004 Area: Expansion – 36,000 square feet; Renovation – 37,000 square feet Site & Program: This is a two phase project. The first included the construction of a new library and renovation of old library space, which was completed in 1987. The second phase includes the addition of a 17,000 square foot science lab for completion in 2004. The site is located in a suburban residential neighborhood. Design: The challenge for both projects was to fit expansion into a tight existing campus with minimal impact to the residential neighborhood both during and after construction. Nagle Hartray designed the library expansion for an existing courtyard. The library connects to several campus buildings and became a hub for student activity. Nagle Hartray designed the science lab expansion to sit atop the new library. State of the art science labs are organized around a sky-lit science exhibition and gathering space. The expansion features a sustainable garden roof and substantial day-lighting. Photography: Howard KaplanİHNK Architectural Photography and Scott McDonaldİHedrich Blessing |
