Northwestern University Residence Halls Evanston, Illinois Completion: 1983 Area: 250,000 square feet Awards: Excellence in Masonry Site & Program: The program consists of 900 beds of student housing. The infill sits were very restrictive. Design: Nagle Hartray designed the residence halls for each of five sites to fit the context of their local environment. The lanon stone Mid-Quad halls unifY a two-block area of campus gothic structures. The angular North Allison hall responds to the shape of its site and traffic patterns. The more formal Kresge Residence Halls reinforce an existing campus axis. And the L-shaped Hinman Hall surrounds a landscaped courtyard and defines a south campus entrance. Through its planning and design, Nagle Hartray maintained a human scale unusual to this scale of expansion.
