Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School Chicago, Illinois Area: 21,000 square feet Site & Program: The Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School is a 400-student nursery through eighth grade urban school. Nagle Hartray defined the program for expansion, which included classrooms, a library and computer lab. Design: Nagle Hartray carefully planned the expansion to meet the program needs without the loss of valuable parking. Maximizing the potential of a constrained site included the creation of a secure play yard constructed above parking. Similarly, the library is planned for use by several age groups at the same time. The architecture extends the language of the existing school and synagogue. The Hebrew alphabet rendered in brick ornaments the masonry exterior. The expansion improves the identity of the school without compromise to the unity of the campus. Photography: ©Bruce Van Inwegen |
