Nathalie Salmon House Chicago, Illinois Completion: 1998 Area: 38,000 square feet Awards: Chicago Building Congress, The Maxwell Award, Best of Senior Housing Award (National Council on Senior Housing) Publications: Spectrum, Designer/Builder, Australian Aged Care Journal Site & Program: The building sits on an urban site along Sheridan Road in an upscale residential neighborhood. The unique program combines elderly with student caregivers and single-parent families in efficiency, one, two and three bedroom apartments. Design: Planning encourages interaction between residents to promote a sense of community. Elderly apartments are mixed with those of students, who exchange caregiver services for housing. Students prepare meals for the elderly in a common kitchen. Some elderly provide day care services for single parents. Assisted living services are provided to those who need them. The brick exterior, punched window openings and roof overhang reflect the building’s Chicago vernacular apartment context. Lighted glass block balconies add a sparkle to the façade. The unique intergenerational program and design solution have earned Nathalie Salmon House a wide range of recognition. Photography: ©Hedrich Blessing |
