Prairie Court Apartments
Oak Park, Illinois

Completion: 1987

Area: 130,000 square feet

Award: Masonry Advisory Council "Excellence in Masonry"

Publication: Architectural Record

Site & Program: Prairie Court was the winner of a village-sponsored competition to redevelop this 2-acre site located adjacent to the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District. The developer-driven program called for maximizing the number of units within the constraints of the historic urban context.

Design: Nagle Hartray met both Village and developer goals by maximizing the number of units in a Prairie School-inspired design. 125 units are organized around a central entry courtyard. The relatively high density was never an issue because the building’s architecture was sensitively scaled and detailed to fit this historic community. The formal order of the exterior is derived from the reconstructed Fransisco Terrace apartments on the neighboring site.
