King-Bruwaert Senior Community Burr Ridge, Illinois Completion: 1994 Area: 97,000 square feet Site & Program: This community consists of the original 1933 skilled care King-Bruwaert House, 59 cottage residences known as The Woods, and the renovation of an alzheimer’s care facility. Buildings are spread across 31 acres of rolling, wooded land in west suburban Chicago. Design: Planning allows for seniors to age in place. Cottage residences are modeled on traditional single-family townhouses. Cottages are one story except where topography allows for walk-out lower levels. They are organized in clusters of three units, each with attached garages. Skilled care and alzheimer’s facilities are available when independent living is no longer possible. Nagle Hartray paid particular attention to the integration between new housing and existing conditions. Cottages reflect the formal architecture of the 1933 structure, but are clad in cedar siding and cedar shake roofing to blend with the natural environment. A detailed tree location survey guided the location of all improvements. Photography: ©Leslie Schwartz and ©David Clifton Photography |
