Prairie Crossing Residences Grayslake, Illinois Completion: 2000 Area: 1,850 to 2,950 square feet Site & Program: The 667 acre site is located in a suburb north of Chicago. Sixty percent of the land is dedicated to open space in this planned sustainable community. Nagle Hartray designed seven prototype houses to be located in the densest area of the development. Design: Nagle Hartray modeled prototype home designs on traditional Midwest agrarian residential design, modified to accommodate contemporary living patterns. Houses feature covered porches, great rooms and painted wood siding. Exterior closure design reinforces the sustainability goals of the community. Roof and wall R-values far exceed those typical for this type of housing. Windows are located to provide cross-ventilation. Air infiltration and vapor barriers are carefully detailed to insure proper installation. The planning and building design together are a model for applying sustainable goals to traditional suburban housing development. Photography: ŠNagle Hartray |
