East Pointe Commons Residential Milwaukee, Wisconsin Completion: 1992 Area: 211,000 square feet Award: Urban Land Institute "Award for Excellence" Site & Program: The 11-acre site occupies land cleared for an unexecuted highway extension. The three-block area includes 124 apartments and 64 rental townhouses. Design: Planning and design helped revitalize Milwaukee’s central core. Nagle Hartray reinforced existing urban patterns by reestablishing the street grid and aligning buildings along the edges of the blocks. Each block includes a large shared green. The architecture bridges a gap between existing single-family residences and bulkier residential buildings. A common aesthetic unifies apartment and townhouse housing types, informed by local vernacular residential architecture. The new architecture connects to and revitalizes the existing neighborhood.
