Homan Square Housing Chicago, Illinois Completion: 1996 Area: 800 to 1,600 square feet/unit Publications: Architectural Record and Progressive Architecture Award: Design Matters – Best Practices in Affordable Housing Site & Program: The 54-acre site is the former world headquarters for Sears Roebuck & Co., who partially subsidized development. Nagle Hartray designed 130 of the 600 planned units, which include both rental and for-sale single-family homes for low-income residents. Design: Nagle Hartray master planned the entire site and helped revitalize this community through innovative planning and modern building design. Building massing and location reinforce the city fabric, but also accommodate contemporary concerns for security. Buildings are organized around corner and mid-block parks to address security concerns critical to the success of the project. The parks afford law enforcement view corridors into the development. The parks are an amenity to residents and made secure through the “eyes on the street” of surrounding housing. The clean, modern building design reflects an unusually contemporary view of low-income single-family housing. Photography: ©Hedrich Blessing |
