MacPhail Center for Music
Minneapolis, Minnesota

Completion: Construction pending

Area: 60,000 square feet

Site & Program: MacPhail is the third largest community music school in the country. Its new home is located in the historic mills district in downtown Minneapolis. The program includes music studios for group and for one-on-one instruction, administrative offices, and a 150-seat performance hall.

Design: Performance is crucial to the musical development of MacPhail students. The centrally located performance hall is the heart of the design. Studios are organized around the building’s perimeter to take advantage of natural light. Larger classrooms are located above the performance hall.

Design guidelines based on historic mill buildings inform the exterior. Large first floor windows open the lobby and classrooms to passersby. Punched window openings are arranged in a random pattern. A lighted canopy identifies the entry.
