DuPage Children's Museum
Naperville, Illinois

Completion: 2001

Area: 44,000 square feet

Award: Chicago AIA Distinguished Building Award

Site & Program: The not-for-profit DuPage Children’s Museum is dedicated to stimulating curiosity, creativity, thinking and problem solving in young children. Its new home is located in an old lumber building near downtown Naperville. The program includes interactive exhibitions, performance spaces, party rooms, and a museum store.

Design: Nagle Hartray teamed with architectureisfun, Inc. for this adaptive reuse. Existing roof and structural elements remain exposed in contrast to brightly colored interiors. Little exterior evidence remains of the building’s former life. The colorful exterior is rendered as a series of overscaled building blocks.

The design team has given the museum an identity appropriate to its mission.
