Fremont House Chicago, Illinois Completion: 1998 Area: 3,200 square feet Site & Program: The site is a typical Chicago urban residential lot. This primary residence displays the owners’ art collection. Design: Nagle Hartray transformed traditional rowhouse elements to create a house that reflects contemporary living. A central core including the kitchen and bathrooms is rotated as is the two-story front bay window, which allows natural light to penetrate deep into the space. A second floor balcony is hung within the living room. The transformation of the traditional rowhouse also informs exterior design. Hard-faced brick features glazed brick accents. Massing is consistent with older neighboring residences. The “cornice” is defined as a railing around a roof deck that offers views of the Chicago skyline.
