Lakeside Retreat Lakeside, Michigan Completion: 1996 Area: 6,000 square feet for main + guest house Site & Program: The site is a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. The program consists of a main house and a guest house. Design: Nagle Hartray planned the site as a compound. The crescent-shaped main house shelters the stone patio, which is the focus of outdoor living. The guest house is entered from the patio, but is perched on an old house footing overlooking the bluff. Both houses have views of the lake. The houses are also linked by similar palettes of materials and forms. Vertical cedar siding, sloped tern-metal roofing and sunscreens relate the houses to each other. The compound balances the houses and other improvements with the natural beauty of the wooded site.
