Dunewood Retreat
Bridgman, Michigan

Completion: 1995

Area: 3,600 square feet

Award: Chicago AIA Distinguished Building Award

Site & Program: The sloping site is heavily wooded. Local erosion-control ordinances limit the area on which anything can be built. This secondary residence will eventually become the family’s year-round home.

Design: Nagle Hartray perched this house atop a hill among the mature woods. The three-story home has a relatively small footprint to fit the small portion of site available for construction. Horizontal decks complement vertical massing to give the structure a tree-house quality.

The design blurs distinction between inside and out. Large picture windows break down divisions between inside and out. Spaces flow one into another, between indoor and outdoor living spaces. Interior and exterior finishes reflect the home’s wooded environment.
